Fall 2009
Saint Clare Room, 3rd Floor
Learning Commons, Technology Center, and Library
Thursday, October 29, 2009
7 - 8:30 p.m.
Craig Stephens, Associate Professor, Biology Department, Director of SCU's Public Health Program, and Director of Education for the Center for Science, Technology, and Society will serve as moderator for a panel discussion of Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for "The Soul of a New Machine" and best selling author of such other books as Among Schoolchildren and Home Town. His most recent book is Strength in What Remains.
Mountains Beyond Mountains is the story of Dr. Paul Farmer, Harvard-educated medical doctor and anthropologist, infectious-disease specialist, and recipient of a MacArthur 'genius' grant.
The Book of the Quarter will be introduced and moderated by Craig Stephens, Associate Professor of Biology. Other panelists are Teresia Hinga, Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Laure Bjawi-Levine, Post-Doctoral Fellow and Lecturer in Anthropology. After the panel, there will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.
Mountains Beyond Mountains was the summer reading for all of this year's freshman class, but you do not have to have read the book to attend the presentation and discussion.
The Fall Book of the Quarter is one of several campus events on global health issues, scheduled during the 2009-10 academic year. While attending the Book of the Quarter, please be sure to visit the photo exhibit "On the Same Map, Celebrating 20 Years of Health and Social Justice" from Partners in Health on display on the 2nd floor of the Harrington Learning Commons, Sobrato Technology Center and Orradre Library, October 13 - November 20, 2009.
