In God's Hotel, Dr. Victoria Sweet tells the story of San Francisco's Laguna Honda Hospital, the last almshouse in the country and a descendant of the Hôtel-Dieu that cared for the sick in the Middle Ages. This event will feature Dr. Sweet in conversation with Associate Professor Dr. Angel Islas and student Alana Hinkston.

Dr. Sweet is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and a prize-winning historian with a Ph.D. in history. She practiced medicine for twenty years at Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco, where she began writing. In her recent book, God's Hotel: A Doctor, a Hospital, and a Pilgrimage to the Heart of Medicine, she lays out her evidence - in stories of her patients and her hospital - for some radically new ideas about medicine and healthcare in this country.

Dr. Angel Islas is an associate professor in the Department of Biology and director of the Biotechnology Program at Santa Clara University. His research examines the molecular events that occur when DNA polymerases, the enzymes responsible for duplicating DNA, encounter damaged DNA.
