Glen Bradley, a rising sophomore who intends to major in Business has received a Fulbright Award for the Nottingham Trent Summer Institute in Creativity, Culture, History and Heritage, a four-week program held July 2013 in the UK.   This fellowship is awarded by the US-UK Fulbright Commission to approximately fifteen undergraduates nationally and provides for tuition and fees, accommodation, meals, and round trip airfare.  

 

This is the first year that SCU has participated in this Fulbright program for undergraduates and we are delighted to have Glen represent Santa Clara University.  Applicants for this highly competitive program must demonstrate a high level of academic achievement with a minimum 3.5 GPA and have at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete.  Applications are due in March of each year.  For more information:  http://www.fulbright.org.uk/fulbright-awards/exchanges-to-the-uk/undergraduates/nottingham-trent-university

 

Emily Hawley:  The Fulbright award will send Hawley to Jordan for a year to advance her  Arabic and research democratization efforts. She will spend the first six months in Amman at the prestigious language institute Qasid. For the second half of her stay she will be traveling throughout the country to study how the powerful tribal system has influenced King Abdullah's promised top-down democratic reforms. Aven Satre-Meloy will go to Turkey after winning a Fulbright Teaching assistantship. A double major in political science and environmental studies, he will assist English professors at the university level. The Fulbright program’s English Teaching Assistantships places English teaching assistants in dozens of countries. Satre-Meloy hopes to use discussions of current events and American news to increase not only his students’ language proficiency but also their cultural knowledge of the United States. 

 

In addition, two SCU students have been awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for undergraduate study abroad.  Jesse Caemmerer is a rising senior majoring in Political Science and minoring in Asian Studies.  Jesse will study in China on the Beijing/Loyola University of Chicago program during fall 2013.  Jesse is from Bellingham, Washington.  Karina Lerma is a rising junior majoring in Marketing.  Karina will study in Brazil on the Sao Paulo-Business and Culture/CIEE program during fall 2013.   Karina is from Hercules, CA.  

 

The Gilman Scholarship provides awards to US undergraduate students who are receiving Pell Grant funding to participate in study abroad and aims to diversify the students who study abroad as well as the countries and regions where they go.   The Gilman Scholarship Program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State.  The Gilman Scholarship Program awards scholarships two times each year.
