Carol Ann Gittens is Appointed Interim Dean of Santa Clara’s School of Education and Counseling Psychology
SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 14, 2015 — Santa Clara University announced the appointment of Dr. Carol Ann Gittens as interim dean of the School of Education and Counseling Psychology, effective June 15. She will succeed Nick Ladany and serve in the role until a permanent dean is selected through a national search.
Gittens is presently an associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences and an associate professor in the Liberal Studies program. She directs SCU’s undergraduate pre-teaching advising program as well as the interdisciplinary minor in urban education. From 2007-2012, Gittens was founding director of SCU’s Office of Assessment. She led SCU’s efforts related to accreditation, established new methods of evaluating institutional effectiveness and student learning, and designed and managed a multi-year, assessment plan for the revised Core curriculum.
“I embrace this opportunity with enthusiasm. Because of the great potential of the School, its highly motivated students, dedicated staff, and accomplished faculty, the School is very well positioned for continued success. I am looking forward to the coming year,” commented Gittens.
Gittens serves as an educational assessment mentor and accreditation evaluator for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and a member of the Board of Institutional Reviewers of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).
“Carol Gittens is an experienced and highly capable administrator with deep knowledge of teacher credentialing,” said Provost Dennis Jacobs. “She will continue to strengthen the school’s graduate degree programs and institutional partnerships within the region.”
Gittens received her B.A. in psychology and women’s studies from the University of California, Davis, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology from U.C. Riverside. She joined the SCU faculty in 1996. She is the co-author of the book THINK Critically, now in its third edition.
