Historical Background

1999

Through the Building Partnerships for Diversity grant from the James Irvine Foundation, the Center for Multicultural Learning (CML) was formed. The mission of the Center advanced multicultural education and worked toward improving the overall campus environment for diversity for all students, faculty, and staff.
Students, staff and faculty saw the need to raise awareness of the LGBTQ community. The Safe Space initiative was started to promote awareness and allyship for the LGBTQ community.

June 2007

The Building Partnerships for Diversity grant came to an end. Diversity, Multicultural Learning and Inclusive Excellence initiatives moved to the Office of the Provost.
During the Summer of 2007, the Office for Multicultural Learning was formed in conjunction with the Council on Inclusive Excellence. The efforts and goals that were set forth by the Center for Multicultural Learning and by the James Irvine Foundation grant became embedded into the fabric of the University. The Office for Multicultural Learning along with the Council continued to promote diversity, multicultural learning and inclusive excellence.

Summer 2010

The Office for Multicultural Learning moved to the Division of Student Life and was located on the 2nd Floor of the Locatelli Center.
A group of SCU community members wrote a proposal to create a physical space that focused on the needs of Santa Clara's LGBTQ community.

Fall 2011

The Rainbow Resource Center was established under the purview of the Office for Multicultural Learning and opened its doors at its location in downstairs Benson Memorial Center, Room 11.under the purview of the Office for Multicultural Learning.

Winter 2018

The Office for Multicultural Learning moved to its new office and new address is 832 Market Street, Santa Clara, CA 95050.
