Santa Clara University Unveils Two Online Engineering Certificates
SANTA CLARA, Calif, March 15, 2024 – In an effort to meet the growing demand from Silicon Valley companies and prospective graduate students, Santa Clara University’s School of Engineering is proud to announce the launch of its Online Certificate in Robotics and Automation and Online Certificate in Applied Bioengineering programs. By launching its first two online programs, the School of Engineering is expanding its reach of excellence even further into Silicon Valley and beyond.
The online graduate certificates will comprise a total of 16 units each and can be completed part-time and 100% online in as little as 12-18 months. Additionally, the certificate courses can contribute toward a Master of Science degree in Robotics and Automation or Bioengineering from Santa Clara University. The programs are likely to appeal to students who have completed a bachelor degree in engineering or a similar field. By completing an online engineering certificate, graduates will have the opportunity to pivot their careers, reskill within their preferred area of engineering, and have a competitive edge when seeking new jobs or promotions.
Robotics and Automation - Launching Fall 2024
Robotics and the automation sciences relating to intelligent machines and smart systems is a burgeoning field that is fueling the economy, driving employment in Silicon Valley and beyond, and transforming the nature of work in a wide range of applications. Santa Clara's certificate in robotics and automation balances deep technical expertise with practical application-oriented experience. A technical core ensures competence in the areas of robotics system design and control. Elective-based focus areas within the degree provide opportunities for students to build knowledge and expertise in application areas such as advanced manufacturing, autonomous mobile robots, industrial internet of things, and robotic teleoperation. Through a short-term residency option, Santa Clara also offers a highly novel range of experiences such as operating underwater robots, flying drones, controlling land rovers, and operating satellite systems.
"Our Online Certificate Program in Robotics and Automation is designed to equip learners with cutting-edge skills in this rapidly evolving field. This program reflects our commitment to delivering a high-quality education that meets the demands of a wide range of industries. Beyond partnerships with local companies and agencies, we provide a modern and highly relevant curriculum that results in a strong student recruitment pipeline,” says Christopher Kitts, director of the Robotic Systems Laboratory and associate dean of research and interdisciplinary programs for the School of Engineering. “Through this program, participants will gain invaluable knowledge and hands-on experience, preparing them to excel in the dynamic world of robotics and automation."
Applied Bioengineering - Launching Fall 2025
Certificate students will learn about new technologies in traditional and regenerative medicine, medical devices, prosthetics, biomaterials, and molecular biotechnology. These ever-growing technologies make a true impact in the medical field by creating smarter, faster, and less-expensive approaches and medical devices to detect, diagnose, and treat human disease. Students will be educated on best practices within the bioengineering field in order to help them stand out to employers, pivot within the bioengineering field, elevate or modernize their skillset, and stay up to date with emerging trends in Silicon Valley. This new online certificate brings flexibility and modern trends to the School of Engineering’s renowned graduate programs.
"This flexible program will allow students to dive deep into all sectors of the bioengineering umbrella, while having the opportunity to conduct collaborative, mentored discussions, and networking opportunities with their peers and the greater Silicon Valley community,” says Prashanth Asuri, chair and associate professor in the School of Engineering’s bioengineering department. “The coursework helps prepare students for whatever direction bioengineering takes them in an efficient, modern, and ethical manner.”
Faculty Excellence
The School of Engineering’s faculty are actively engaged in research at the intersection of engineering, life sciences, robotics and bioengineering. They prepare graduate students for exciting and meaningful careers in bioengineering, robotics, mechatronic system design, and beyond through innovative approaches to teaching and research training. In addition to highlighting the benefits of research and associated technologies, the School also equips students to consider the ethical implications and social impacts of advanced technology, a hallmark of Santa Clara University.
With a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and a commitment to discovery and innovation, SCU's Online Certificates in Robotics and Automation and Applied Bioengineering are designed to cultivate visionary leaders. Graduates of the program will shape the future of healthcare, biomedical technologies, and sustainable solutions by making a true impact in Silicon Valley and beyond.
Leveraging Silicon Valley Connections
Beyond the notable connections within the university, SCU prides itself on its interconnection to its surrounding community – Silicon Valley. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of robotics/mechanical engineers and bio/biomedical engineers are projected to grow 10% each from 2022 to 2032. That rate is faster than the average for all other occupations. With direct connections to companies like Stryker, Roche, Cepheid, Tesla, Intuitive and more, SCU’s close proximity and faculty connections to industry-leading companies sets the university apart from other institutions.
The new online engineering programs will be powered by the university’s completely in-house, online solutions team – SCU Online. SCU Online combines the best of Santa Clara University's traditional education while providing increased accessibility, flexibility, and convenience. Rooted in the Jesuit value of educating the whole person, SCU Online allows students to learn from anywhere while still connecting with peers, professors, campus activities, and the greater Silicon Valley community. Each of Santa Clara University's Online programs promise an equal quality, accredited education.
