The information provided in the SCU Compassionate and Responsive Educator (SCU CARE) folder is a valuable resource to assist you when working with a student who is in distress or causing you concern. This folder provides examples of troubling behaviors, tips for how to approach a concerning student, and how to connect that student to the appropriate resource.
As a Catholic Jesuit University we value the concept of Cura Personalis- care for the entire person. Reaching out to students who are in troubling or distressing circumstances is critical in helping such individuals to resolve difficulties so they can make the most of their Santa Clara Experience. Additionally, by identifying students whose behavior and demeanor may be a cause of distress is an important way that we can maintain an environment where all members of our community are safe.
If you are ever in doubt, speak to the student, call a resource, speak to a colleague, or to your supervisor. Everyone has a role in meeting the mental health needs of SCU students. Please DO NOT hesitate to take action in support of a student by contacting the Office of Student Life.
