The Synod on Synodality, which began in October 2021 and will culminate in October 2024 with the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, marks a new chapter for the Church. It reinforces the ecclesiology of the People of God—a key theme from the Second Vatican Council—and calls for conversion and reform in relationships, communication, and ecclesial structures enabling a synodal institutional model for the 21st Century Church.
Following the Synod's conclusion, the Church will enter a crucial phase of implementing its findings. This phase will require both formation and support to ensure the proper application of synodal conclusions. A synodal Church must be inclusive, participatory, and centered on communal discernment. Values that cannot be taken for granted after living for so many years in a clerical ecclesial model. In this context, this project is key to assist this momentum of the Church during this implementation phase of synodality and the subsequent transformation of the current clerical culture.
For many Catholics —laypeople, priests, bishops, and religious— synodality remains a new concept, necessitating ongoing formation. While theological and ecclesiological frameworks were established during the Synod, their implementation in local Churches presents challenges that require well-formed leaders equipped with the necessary skills. To support this effort, the project will provide two years of formation through MOOCs and conferences focused on implementing the Synod's conclusions. It will accompany pastoral agents, diocesan teams, bishops, religious communities, and all the People of God. Specialized formation will also be offered through MOOCs and small group sessions tailored for Latin American pastoral agents, with each MOOC aiming to reach 100,000 participants in several languages.
