SCU students can explore their passions in scholarship or creative activities by participating in paid research under the mentorship of an SCU faculty member. The experience should be focused on an original research project or creative work that provides the student with the opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor. The projects should be faculty-driven, meaning that the research being proposed clearly fits within the faculty member’s research or creative agenda, with a clear mentoring plan to integrate the student in a meaningful and collaborative way.
By applying through a University-wide, single application portal with a common set of guidelines, research proposals will be evaluated for quality prior to consideration for specific grants and awards for which the student and research project may be eligible.
The grants and awards incorporated in this application portal include, but are not limited to:
Clare Boothe Luce Research Scholar Awards: The Henry Luce Foundation provides awards for undergraduate women conducting academic year and summer research. These awards are for undergraduate women who are U.S. citizens majoring in the natural sciences and engineering. An overall GPA of 3.25 or higher is required at the time of the award. Pre-health science majors are ineligible for these awards. Also, students planning to attend medical school or to pursue health professions careers are ineligible for this award.
De Novo Fellowship: The De Novo Fellowship encourages underrepresented STEM students to participate in a research project. This prestigious fellowship is awarded to outstanding students from underrepresented groups in the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering to work on well-crafted research projects with faculty mentors who are committed to increasing diversity in STEM.
Gerald and Sally DeNardo Science Scholars Program: The Gerald and Sally DeNardo Science Scholars receive academic year and summer research and supply awards through graduation. The program is funded through a generous endowment created by Drs. Gerald and Sally DeNardo. The ideal candidate will represent the best of a Jesuit education, with a commitment to pursuing a career in the health sciences broadly defined. Their research project must reflect the significance of the proposed work in the context of the health sciences. The extended mentoring relationship between faculty and student is of the utmost importance to the DeNardos. Please contact Marie Brancati at mbrancati@scu.edu with any questions about the DeNardo Science Scholars Program.
