The Retiree Email Service offers a subset of the service that SCU provides to active faculty, staff, and students.
- Retirees do not continue to use the account associated with their SCU employment. A brand-new account is created for retirees, with a brand-new email address in this form:
firstname.lastname@retirees.scu.edu - Retirees will have access to the following Google Workspace services:
Contacts
Email - Retirees are not included in SCU’s announcement or essentials email lists.
- Retiree accounts use Google’s native authentication and Google’s 2FA. Accounts in the Retiree Email Service are not included in SCU’s single sign-on (SSO) service, or Duo.
- Retiree accounts won’t appear in SCU’s Gmail Contacts Directory. Likewise, retirees won’t see SCU’s Contacts Directory.
- Plug-ins and add-ons are not permitted.
Senior Lecturers and tenured faculty who, upon retirement, are awarded emeritus status, keep their scu.edu email account.
Senior Lecturers, Renewable Term Faculty, and tenured faculty who retire without emeritus status do not keep their scu.edu email account, but are eligible for a new account in the Retiree Email Service.
Faculty eligible for retirement are those with renewable-term and continuing appointments as defined in Faculty Handbook 3.1.2.1, after reaching the age of 55 and having completed ten years of service at the University (Faculty Handbook 3.5.1).
The account you use as an employee may contain University-related emails that include sensitive data that SCU is required by law to protect. Because of this, you should not transfer University-related emails to any other account, including your Retiree Email account.
No, your SCU account will be closed, and any messages sent to your SCU account after that will bounce back to the sender.

To save personal (non-University-related) documents:
- To preserve the Google Docs format, use a personal (non-SCU) Gmail account to save your personal documents. Your account in the Retiree Email Service does not include Drive.
- You can also download files in PDF or Microsoft Office format.
More information from Google:
Download files from Google Drive
Upload files and folders to Google Drive
You will still retain access to your Retiree Email account. In addition, your regular SCU account will become active again, and it will be used as the primary email for University communications.
Once your Retiree Email account has been set up, you will receive a message -- sent to your non-SCU alternate email address -- telling you that your account is set up and how to set the password. Be sure to set your password right away -- for security reasons, you will have 48 hours to set the password for your Retiree Email account.
Tips from Google on setting your passwordOnce you set the password for your Retiree Email account, you will see a prompt requiring you to enroll in two-factor authentication, which Google calls “2-Step Verification.” Be sure to enroll in 2SV right away -- for security reasons, you will have 7 days to enroll your account in 2SV.
Tips from Google on setting up 2SVTo access your Retiree Email account:
- On a smartphone, download the Gmail app from the Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store.
- On a computer, use the Chrome browser to access the Gmail website.
The Retiree Email Service does not use SSO. To sign in, use your email address (something like bucky.bronco@retirees.scu.edu), the password you set, and the 2-Step Verification method you set up.
To ensure better email security for everyone at SCU, these access methods are not permitted:
- email forwarding
- less-secure legacy email protocols (like POP and IMAP)
- email applications that require you to store a password on your computer
More information: Manage the Username and Password associated with your Retiree Email account.
To transfer contacts from your SCU account to your Retiree Email account, first export your SCU contacts to a file, then import the file into your Retiree Email contacts.
You will only be able to export and import contacts you’ve added to your SCU account. You won’t be able to download contacts from the central SCU directory.
