If another student discloses that they have experienced or have been accused of discrimination, sex-based harassment (including sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking), retaliation, and/or other civil-rights based offenses, there are a number of ways you can support them:
Listen: Let them decide what information they would like to share. It’s important not to push someone for details. Focus on being supportive and present for them as they share information with you.
Be supportive: Provide non-judgmental support, and offer to help them seek out resources which may include directing them to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Title IX.
Be respectful: Respect the decisions they make about engaging with a University or criminal process. Encourage them to take steps that promote their wellbeing. Be sure to respect their privacy.
Take care of yourself: Don’t be afraid to seek support for what you have experienced through the process of helping a friend.
