There is nothing like outdoor grilling. It is one of the most popular ways to cook food. But a grill placed too closely to anything that can burn is a fire hazard. They can be very hot, causing burn injury.
BBQ Safety Tips
- Only SCU BBQs should be used in designated BBQ Areas.
- Personal BBQs are prohibited at SCU.
- Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should be used outdoors.
- The grill should be placed 20 feet away from any building, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
- Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from grills and in trays below the grill.
- Never leave your grill unattended.
- Never move a hot grill.
- Cancel any outdoor activity if there is severe weather such high winds, storms, threat of lightning, or for any Spare the Air Day.
Charcoal Grills
- There are several ways to get charcoal ready for use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
- If you use starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid.
- Never add charcoal fluid or other flammable liquids to the fire.
- When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.
- Do NOT pour water on hot embers.
Propane Grills
- Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each use.
