The first Santa Clara mission was established in 1777 by the Franciscan monks on the banks of the Guadalupe River. The Mission and surrounding land was then given to the Jesuits in 1851. The Santa Clara University mission is the 8th of 21 California missions and is the only one to be associated with a University. The current mission was reconstructed in 1926 after being demolished by an electrical fire. The original bell, donated by the King of Spain was the only structure to survive the fire and can be found in the bell tower today.
