Dr. Shireen AlAzzawi is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Economics at Santa Clara University's Leavey School of Business, where she teaches courses in international economics and economic development. She is a Research Fellow at the Economic Research Forum in Egypt and serves as Co-Editor of the Middle East Development Journal.

Dr. AlAzzawi's research lies at the intersection of labor and welfare economics, examining issues of poverty, inequality, and labor market dynamics. Her work addresses topics including occupational segregation, informality, labor market transitions, migration, and welfare, as well as the impacts of climate shocks and AI on employment and vulnerability, with a regional focus on the Middle East and North Africa. Her scholarship has been published in Energy Policy, Social Indicators Research, the Journal of African Economies, the Review of Income and Wealth, Economic Development and Cultural Change, the International Journal of Manpower, and the Journal of International Trade and Economic Development, among other journals.

Before joining Santa Clara, Dr. AlAzzawi was an Assistant Professor at the American University in Cairo.

She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Davis, and master's degrees from Stanford University and the American University in Cairo.
