Sangeeta Luthra
Sangeeta Luthra received a small grant from the Faculty Student Research Assistant Program at SCU for her ongoing research on Sikh American institution building in the post 9/11 period. She presented papers on this research at two conferences. The first paper, presented at the Sikh Feminist Research Institute conference at the University of Michigan, explored new roles for Sikh American women in activism, political engagement, and institution building by the community. The paper that resulted from this presentation, “Out of the Ashes, Sikh American institution building and the promise of equality for Sikh women,” has been submitted for publication by the journal Sikh Formations.
Sangeeta also attended the Fourth Annual Sikh Studies conference at the University of California, Riverside. Her paper explored the characteristics of the millennial generation that have pushed young Sikhs into leadership roles in a community that is traditionally patriarchal and gerontocratic. Both papers explore cultural and historical change in a diasporic community by looking at reflexivity and creative agency generated by political crisis.
Finally Sangeeta published a chapter in collection of personal narratives called, Her Name is Kaur: Sikh American Women Write about Faith, Courage and Love.
