Luna Park is a surreal theme park that visualizes the coexistence of happiness and sadness in a place. It reimagines the absurdity of our interconnected technologized world in a playful and nostalgic way by borrowing inspiration from world news, pop culture, and childhood memories of war.
The name of this exhibition comes from the biggest amusement park in Iran (from 1970 to 2007). But it wasn’t all fun and games. After the Islamic revolution in Iran, and for a few years during the Iran-Iraq war, Luna park became a place where families of political prisoners would take a shuttle to nearby Evin Prison to meet their loved ones during the day.
Roya Ebtehaj has exhibited her work both locally and internationally. Her work has been shown at the Kyoto Shibori Museum in Japan, Usak Archeology Museum in Turkey, the National Center for Contemporary Arts in Minsk, Belarus, the Maker Faire in San Mateo, California and the Berkeley Art Center. For the past four years she has been teaching digital art courses as a Post-MFA Fellow in the Department of Art and Art History at Santa Clara University.
