REAL Interns
The REAL internship program offers students in the College of Arts and Sciences grants of up to $5000 to help support them while they gain valuable work experience through summer internships of their choosing. This summer the Classics department was proud to work in conjunction with the REAL program to support two of our majors.
Max Gavenman (’22) is working with Professor Zehavi Husser of Biola University to translate Latin inscriptions. The contents of the inscriptions are then used to create data maps that reveal how frequently each inscriptional element is in different areas of the Roman Empire. He writes, “Not only do I get to expand on my limited knowledge, I get to experience what having a job, in most capacities, will be like in my post-college life; I’m working hard from nine to five, and loving it!” and “Dr. Husser has inspired me to think more about my future by promoting ways in which to focus my studies, whether that will lead towards graduate school or potential career options.”
Sarah Lizarde (’22) writes of her internship, “I am a marketing intern at Zarella, a start-up founded by two Santa Clara alumni who strive to bring convenience to the current struggle of shopping for sustainable and ethical clothing. Zarella is intended to launch this August. I primarily manage and create content for Zarella's social media, but have additionally conducted research on the fashion industry. This experience has required me to think outside the box to add interest to professional writing. I choose to employ rhetorical devices often, proving the applicability of my study of Ancient poetry. I am fortunate to be gaining professional experience that is not only improving my writing and management skills, but is also bettering the planet and garment laborers' lives.”
