John Farnsworth is Retiring
It’s official—John Farnsworth will be retiring from teaching at the end of the current academic year, making him the first-ever ESS faculty member to retire.
Farnsworth came to us from the English department back in the days of the Environmental Studies Institute when our faculty were all joint appointments with other departments. Truly a lifelong learner, for seven of his first eleven years at SCU he was a graduate student, first at Stanford University and finally at the University of Stirling in Scotland. During most of that time he was teaching full time while studying full time as well.
In addition to his duties with ESS, John has also been the Faculty Director of CyPhi RLC for the past twelve years, during which time he also served as Provost’s Faculty Associate for Curriculum Development and Transformation, running the university’s sustainability across the curriculum program. He also served as Faculty Fellow with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, and has helped develop sustainability programs in over 50 other universities.
Teaching has always been Dr. Farnsworth’s passion, and two years ago he was awarded the College of Arts and Sciences’ highest teaching award. After 21 years in the classroom, however, he plans to become a full time writer, and has a book coming out through Cornell University Press next fall. He will be reading a chapter from that book at the ESS colloquium on June 1st.
The Associate Student Government has invited Dr. Farnsworth to give his formal “Last Lecture,” which will be titled “On Revision,” on May 9th at 7:30 in the Williman Room. The university community is encouraged to attend.
