Josue Hernandez-Perez Awarded The Lucky Hinkle Sustainability Award
Josue Hernandez-Perez (Environmental Science Major; Biology & Sustainability Minor) was awarded the Lucky Hinkle Sustainability Award. This award was established to honor the memory of Lucky Hinkle, a longtime University staff member who worked diligently to promote recycling on campus, and is given to the graduating senior with a declared major in Environmental Science or Environmental Studies who, in the judgment of the Environmental Studies and Science faculty, has made the most significant contribution to promoting a culture of sustainability at Santa Clara University and beyond.

Josue’s work as the Circular Economy Student Coordinator with the Center for Sustainability has built and enhanced a culture of reuse, repair, and sharing at SCU –ultimately reducing waste, while also meeting students' basic needs. Josue he has been responsible and/or played a key role in developing the Buy Nothing Facebook Group and Maternity Share Shelf, coordinating the annual Swap for Good and EcoFashion Show events, expanding our Bronco Surplus/Zero Waste Move Out and Terrycycle efforts, and leading the operations of Bucky's Closet (SCU's free thrift store). Since his sophomore year, he has helped divert ~6,500 lbs of items from the landfill!
