Latina/o/x Minor

The minor consists of a minimum of twenty-nine (29) quarter units. Students must complete 3 lower-division courses, and 4 upper-division courses (including an applied learning experience).

Course Requirements
Lower Division requirements (3 courses total):

  1. Two of the following courses focused on Latinas/os/xs in the U.S.:
    • ETHN 20. Introduction to Chicana/o/x and Latina/o/x Studies
    • ETHN 21. Introduction to Chicana/o/x Literature (also listed as ENGL 36)
    • ETHN 22. Introduction to Chicana/o/x Theater (also listed as THTR 14)
    • ETHN 25. Sexuality and Spirituality in Latinx and Chicanx Literature and Theologies (also listed as TESP 59 and WGST 44)
    • RSOC 12. Latinos and Lived Religion in the United States
  2. One of the following lower-division courses emphasizing comparative, cross-racial, multiracial, and intersectional analysis of race and ethnicity:
    • ETHN5. Intro to the Study of Race & Ethnicity in the U.S. 
    • ETHN 55. Cross-Racial Electoral Politics

  3. A service-learning course, internship experience, or other equivalent work directly engaged with Latina/o/x community or communities on or off campus (equivalent to one course with at minimum a 2-unit allocation). Examples include but are not limited to:

Experiential Learning and Study Abroad
Students are strongly encouraged to focus on Latinas/os/xs in the U.S. for the experiential learning requirement in the Core Curriculum. Students are also encouraged (but not required) to participate in a study abroad program in Latin America. Courses taken in these programs may be accepted as requirements for the minor. Students must meet with the chair of the Ethnic Studies department to get approval for such courses before completing them.
