SCU Mathematics and Computer Science Department hosts Math Circle for middle schoolers
Every other Monday evening, about 25 local middle school students arrive on campus to attend SCU’s Math Circle, an enrichment program focusing on interesting, surprising, accessible and fun problems in mathematics and computer science. Rick Scott, the organizer, single-handedly ran a similar program at a local middle school last year, when he saw the need to offer an alternative to the standard mathematics curriculum. This year, he broadened its reach by hosting the program at SCU, and inviting students from all local school districts. At every meeting, students explore topics in graph theory, combinatorics, computer science, number theory and more.
