Josef Hellebrandt
Biographical Information
Josef Hellebrandt is an associate professor and a former chair and associate dean in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, where he teaches courses in German and Spanish languages and cultures. After finishing a M.A. in Political Science in his native Germany, he earned a M.A. in Latin American Literature at the University of North Carolina) (Chapel Hill) and subsequently a Ph.D in Foreign Language Education at Purdue University.
He also teaches at the South Bay German School, a non-profit Saturday morning institution in San Jose, and served on its board for many years.

His research interests focus on service-learning, community engagement and the teaching of environmental issues in German and Spanish.
