Music has maintained an active and vital presence at Santa Clara University since 1851, when the first piano was brought to campus by Father Nobili. Today, the Department of Music serves almost one hundred majors and minors and engages a diverse range of students across many academic disciplines. Our distinguished faculty are active scholars and performers in a range of disciplines both on campus and around the world.
Our many ensembles provide opportunities for students of all majors to perform a diverse repertoire of music at a high artistic level under the leadership of inspiring conductors and directors.
Our curriculum is designed to provide students of diverse backgrounds with the skills necessary not only to understand and to perform music, but also to appreciate music's role in human history and its potential to enhance the lives of all people.
Our quarterly department ensemble concerts and regular student and faculty recitals create a rich season of artistic events widely attended by the campus and local communities. The highly successful Music at Noon concert series and music department sponsored festivals foster collaboration between students, faculty, and guest artists who come together to create and share new musical art. SCU Presents coordinates numerous productions by the Department of Music and the Department of Theater and Dance, and offers a full list of upcoming events for the season.
