Musical Theatre

Love musical theatre? But have another major or a heavy workload in another subject? We invite you to pursue the interdisciplinary minor in Musical Theatre.

The Musical Theatre minor offers experience and training in an art form that synthesizes the performing arts of music, theatre, and dance as well as aspects of the visual arts and literature. Musical theatre is prominent in America as art, entertainment, social commentary and civic engagement, and therefore plays a part in Jesuit education of the whole person, combining personal formation with practical application in the service of others. Specific objectives of this program include: entry-level proficiency for a career in performance, enhancement in teaching, or further training in graduate school.

Focus is on the development and practice of audition techniques; performance of acting, singing and theatrical dance; and knowledge of the cultural history and various forms of Musical theatre.  While the program focus is on the Broadway Musical, students with an interest in Opera/Operetta are encouraged to work with their voice and performance teachers to select from appropriate repertoire. Required courses, taught by Music and Theatre and Dance faculty, include Music theory, Aural skills, Voice lessons, Acting for Musical Theatre, Dance styles and technique classes, Musical Theatre History and a Musical Theatre performance/review.
