Senior Mary Pat Peterson is leaving SCU with a deep understanding of the science behind political relations, behavior, and philosophy.

With so much of today's world dictated by politics, Mary Pat Peterson ’23 believes that entering the workforce with a vast interdisciplinary knowledge of political science is “perhaps the most useful perspective a person can have.”

Beyond her major, Peterson has pursued a wide variety of academic interests, including minors in Spanish and Religious Studies. She has served as the president of the Mock Trial team for the past two years, which has seen incredible success under her leadership. Additionally, Peterson has served on Santa Clara University’s Associated Student Government as an Associate Justice, and she was even sponsored by SCU’s Political Science department to attend The Wheatley Institution's Student Conference on Religion in the Public Sphere this past April in Utah.

Tell us about a favorite SCU memory…
My favorite SCU memory is traveling with the Mock Trial team to compete in Colorado. Our team had so much fun together, making the most of the snowy weather and getting to know competitors from other schools. For any new student looking to find a great community, I highly recommend joining the Mock Trial team.

Do you have any favorite SCU professors?
Honestly, I have had so many professors at Santa Clara that I respect and admire. One that particularly comes to mind is Cathleen Chopra-McGowan in the Religious Studies department. She taught me that pursuing an education is more than just attending class; it is seeking out the information and training that will best equip you to achieve your goals.

What are your post-graduate plans?
After I graduate, I plan on attending law school before starting a career practicing water law and immigration law in Northern California.
