My area of scholarship is in applying complexity theory to better understand how organizations work and the influence informal groups have on formal hierarchies of power and authority. In addition to my academic work, I have held senior management positions in a wide variety of health and hospital systems where my work involves leading teams in strategic decision making in the context of state and federal health policy. This has ranged from improving communication between primary care and mental health providers resulting in better patient care to setting performance standards for community-based organizations to assure clients receive consistently high-quality care. I am engaged in implementing programs that address the intersection of the organizations and systems that deliver health care and their relationship to community health.
