Sociology Students Gain Career Insights at Networking Sessions

Sociology internships course hosts networking and career information sessions

Sociology internships course hosts networking and career information sessions

This year, the Department of Sociology hosted three valuable networking and career information sessions for its students, organized in conjunction with the Sociology internships course. These events provided current sociology majors with the opportunity to connect with alumni and learn about post-graduation transitions and career preparation strategies.

The first session, held on February 7th, was an "Early Career Alum Info Session & Networking" event. Recent SCU sociology graduates—Kelly Lelapinyokul ’24, Americops Academic Advisor at. Breakthrough Silicon Valley, and Christina Nelson ’24, Community Engagement Program Specialist at Fresh Approach—shared their experiences and offered advice regarding internship and job opportunities. Panelists also included Tony Alvarez, Americorps Program Director, and Josh Salazar, Operations Manager, both at Breaththrough Silicon Valley.

The second event, titled "SCU Sociology Alum Networking & Career Preparation Strategies," took place on February 21, 2025. This session focused on networking with local SCU sociology alumni from the Class of 2020—J.J. Burwell, Manager, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Projects & Operations at Motorola Solutions, and Annalicia Anaya, President of LearningFuze—and gaining insights into preparing for the job market.

A third event, a "Post-Grad Info Session," was held on May 9th, 2025. This session included a Graduate School Overview with Dr. Enrique Pumar and a Labor Market Opportunities discussion with two recent alumni, Maryam Khatoon ’22, Talent Pipeline Team Lead at the SF International Airport, and Diego Ardilla ’22, User Experience Researcher at Google.
